So often the youth or young adults are refusing to communicate truths to older adults or elders out of fear. Meanwhile, older adults or elders can express any opinion or thought & it is automatically considered wise. Why is that?

Your age does not determine how correct, intelligent or righteous you are. The truth is the truth & it should be expressed with honesty & love.

The idea that being truthful to an elder is a sign of disrespect has got to stop in our families. It causes disconnect & creates a toxic environment.

Who wants that? Who can thrive from that? Who desires to pass that on to the next generation?

It’s not what you say, but how you say it. In the same token, it’s not what you do, but how you do it.

Teaching begins with modeling. Do as I say & not as I do is a joke. We are bound to mimic what we see from the time we are infants.

We must model how to properly communicate our feelings, how to express our thoughts & how to cope with disappointments.

Circumstances change, people change, but life continues regardless of who checks in or checks out.

Life is too short to pretend you are okay, or become content with toxicity. We all deserve to live unapologetically. Young & old.

We need to normalize recognizing truth-telling in the form of honesty & love, and not as a sign of disrespect or envy.

Do you agree or disagree? I want to know how you feel about this. Let’s communicate in the comments section.

[Whether you agree or disagree, please share so that conversations regarding toxic environments can be had amongst families all over.]

I wake up

Thank God

Grab the phone

Swipe the screen

The alarm is now off

But I don’t move

Slow to inhale

Slow to exhale

The to-do list in my mind

Longer than my spine

I need to get up

I need to start my day

I roll over to sit up

The edge of the bed

I am stuck here

Slow to inhale

Slow to exhale

Feet on the floor

Resting in quicksand

I want to stand

I need to stand

So I do

Slow to inhale

Slow to exhale

The walk to the bathroom

The mint flavor on my gums

The water on my face

The look in the mirror

The reminder of who I am

Slow to inhale

Slow to exhale

I walk out refreshed

Believing in myself

I am
